How We Research
Every guide on Discount Mattress starts with one question: will this mattress suit the person who is shopping for it? For a mattress, that means your size, your sleep position, your frame and the money you want to spend.
Here is how we answer it.
1. We start with the buyer
A king mattress in a small room, or a 14-inch mattress on a low frame, can be a poor fit even if the mattress itself is well made.
We check the size, the thickness and the foundation the maker says the mattress needs. When your situation limits the choice, we say what to look for.
2. We compare specs and features
We look at the construction (memory foam, hybrid coils or spring), the layers, the stated firmness, the cover, the certifications and the warranty the maker lists.
Makers describe their mattresses in their own words, so we name the brand for every claim. A claim like "cooling" stays the maker's claim.
3. We look at buyer feedback
We read through what buyers report after they've unboxed a mattress and used it for a while. We look for patterns, like sagging, strong smells, edges that feel soft and mattresses that arrive off size.
One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.
4. We score each product
Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A mattress that's great for one reader may score lower in a guide written for another.
Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.
5. We check safety records
We check the US Consumer Product Safety Commission's recall list for every mattress brand we cover, and we leave out any brand with a mattress recall on file. We also skip unknown brands with no track record.
6. We keep pages up to date
Products change, and some disappear from stores. When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.
What our picks are not
Our picks are research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have slept on every mattress we cover.
We don't give medical advice, and we don't promise that any mattress will fix back pain or improve your sleep. If you have ongoing pain, talk to your doctor.
We label maker claims as the maker's claims.
